Dear Sir,
I wish to use a natural Indian slate, supplied from Rajasthan in India, for lining the bottom and sides of my swimming pool, because of its exciting natural look. I am apprehensive because the slate (to be supplied in one square foot pieces) has a flaky rough side to be in the bottom cement base and a slightly honed top side. Is there a possibility of "flaking" off of sections on the rough bottom side, resulting in the main stone detaching from the cement bottom? On the honed top side, will the lightly chlorinated water or any water likely to penetrate or erode and thereby pit the top and/or erode the slate edging and the grouting, resultig in seepage below the pool floor? Is slate therefore a possible usable or desirable material for pool bottoms and sides? And if it is to be used, what coating or sanding/honing is necessary to stabilise it sufficiently for it to last a long time? Are there different kinds of slate from different regions of India that have different characteristics and what types of slate would be appropriate for this application?
If not slate, is there any other natural looking stone that can be used in this application at a moderate cost?
Would appreciate an early answer.
Thank You,
Regards,
Jagdish Khanna
