Slate treatment

I have a very simple question--I have looked at the
answers here, but they are confusing.  I have a new
hearthstone which is a single piece of honed black
slate (I think from Pennsylvania.)  Should I treat
this with mineral oil or some other slate oil product?
 I don't think it would make much sense to put on a
sealer since it is going to be subject to heat.
Advice?

how to protect it from stains, weather, etc..

Hi,

We just had slate stones put in in front outside of our house.  I wanted to know how to protect it from stains, weather, etc..I'm considering using commercial sealants such as from jasco.  Are those sealants available from home depot any good?  Could you recommend a good outdoor sealant to use.  Thank you.
